Co-founder of GarageGames and, before that, Dynamix a development studio for Sierra/Vivendi/Universal. Director, designer, or producer of over 70 titles including The Incredible Machine, Starsiege: Tribes, Trophy Bass, and the 3D Ultra line of family products. Here is my Wikipedia entry. Also, here is my Mobygames profile as well. Be sure to check out my blog, Make It Big In Games for more information about how to make a living in this crazy business.Outside of games I am in the process of starting Furrer Farms, a 200 acre organic farm. For fun, I ride motorcycles (Yamaha FZ-1 and YZ250F), play in a rock band Procrastinators, lift Olympic weights, and spend a lot of time with my family. You can see my personal blog at jefftunnell.

Renewed from my recent summit of Mount Whitney and successes as co-founder of GarageGames I look forward to the next challenge: PushButton Labs. After a childhood of playing games and programming my tape cassette driven Commodore 64 I started my professional career at Dynamix as lead engineer working on several AAA game titles including Silent Thunder, FPS Football, Starsiege and Tribes. In early 2000, I co-founded GarageGames — best known for the Torque Game Engine, Marbleblast, the promotion of indie developers and the InstantAction game portal.

I have been a professional graphic designer for ten years, and have spent the last six years alternating in the roles of game artist and producer. I am currently employed at PushButton Labs where I work on “next-generation” Flash Games and Social Games.

A second generation programmer, with experience in everything from bare-metal embedded code to million-line game engines to web development. During my five years at GarageGames, I mostly worked on C++ game technology (TGE, TGB, TGEA, TNL) and a few games (Zap, Marble Blast Ultra). The forums took up a lot of my time as well, in fact, I still rank as one of the most prolific posters with almost ten thousand posts. More recently, I have been developing in Flash/Flex and ActionScript 3, which is my focus at PushButton Labs.
I like to write and use my camera, and to my surprise, I have had both my writing and photography published. I also enjoy giving talks on technical subjects. I used to be a nationally ranked sabre fencer; nowadays I am re-learning how to play the piano. My cat, Tiffany, is basically unimpressed by all of this, and uses me strictly as a source of food and warmth.

Cutting my computer teeth on a Commodore Vic 20 and learning to program on a Texas Instruments calculator, I spent most of my formative years of web development rejecting GeoCities and working to make small online communities and home-brewed CMS sites. After working with a wide variety of clients as a self-employed web developer, I joined GarageGames, building the game community GreatGamesExperiment.com and the game integration framework for web-based game portal, InstantAction.com. Aside from working on the web, I am highly passionate about writing and playing music and walking my Dachshund with my wife.

I have been programming computers and creating games since I was ten, when I helped my parents make games for the Atari and Commodore computers. I never stopped making games for fun as I pursued a career in software development. In 2002, I co-founded Pinoli Software to focus on making a commercial game, TubeTwist. We chose to use the Torque engine, and I attended many of the GarageGames IndieGamesCon events, where I met Jeff, Rick, and Ben. My passion for making games finally intersected with my non-game career when I began using Flash for user interfaces at VMware, Inc. When not making or playing games, I enjoy reading, hiking, and spending time with my wife and two dogs.

Being the son of a software developer, I have been surrounded by games for my whole life. As a kid I used to write up ideas and draw pictures for games I would like to play, even writing a whole design for a game called “Nits”. I worked at GarageGames for a couple years taking out the garbage and running errands, but I eventually started playing and researching prospective games to publish. I have been interning part time at PBL since it was founded, and have done design work on Grunts: Skirmish, Social City, The Incredible Machine, and an unannounced project. Now that I recently graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Digital Arts, I am ready to devote my full-time to designing great games. Besides games, I have a big interest in photography and enjoying the outdoors when it isn’t raining here in Eugene.
